At Karaoke UK we love songs, music and of course, singing to that music, which means karaoke is the perfect entertainment for us. On our blog, we write about everything karaoke, from the type of people you meet at karaoke to the best rock bands for karaoke. So, it makes sense we love musicals too, especially those which songs the audience can sing along with!
Get yourself some quality karaoke equipment – for your home or a pub or bar, and get singing some of the hits from these musicals.
We mentioned in our blog about the best duets in karaoke that “You’re the One That I Want” is a perfect song for a couple, but the 70s musical romantic comedy has plenty of other hits to try out on karaoke night too, such as “Summer Nights”, “Greased Lightnin”. The songs which feature in the film are great for groups who want to get up on stage and sing, as well as there being good solo songs, such as “Sandy” and “There Are Worse Things I Could Do.”
Mamma Mia is almost a musical made for karaoke, using songs from a karaoke staple, ABBA. ABBA songs have been a favourite choice for karaoke singers before the musical was even produced. Based on the various songs of the Swedish pop group, the musical premiered in 1999 and included hits such as “Super Trouper”, “Lay All Your Love on Me” and “Dancing Queen.” The musical proved to be so popular when it opened that it has led to two films, the latest released earlier in 2018, and there are even sing-along versions.
The Sound of Music is an endless classic and features many fantastic songs that are perfect for karaoke – even if you don’t have the vocal talents of Julie Andrews. Popular songs to sing to from the film include “My Favourite Things”, “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and “Do-Re-Mi” and they will definitely get everyone singing along too. The only downside is you will wish you were singing “The Sound of Music” on top of a hill in Austria yourself!
Though the songs are more adult-themed, Rocky Horror Picture Show has many banging tunes to choose from for a karaoke night. “The Time Warp” could easily get the crowd on their feet dancing along, “Sweet Transvestite” is another crowd pleaser and “Dammit Janet” is an easy one to learn. The science-fiction horror-comedy musical is also a great option for fancy dress, especially if you are having a theme night for karaoke!
Hairspray is a fun musical filled with one hit after another. There have been several versions of Hairspray, starting with the 1988 comedy, which became a 2002 Broadway and then a film again in 2007. Musical numbers to choose from for your karaoke performance include “Good Morning Baltimore”, “Welcome to the 60s”, and “You Can’t Stop the Beat” which are all feel good numbers that will get everyone singing along!
The last musical on this list is The Greatest Showman. Though it is only a year old, it is already a favourite musical of many, starring Hugh Jackman, Zendaya and Zac Efron. The soundtrack for the film was a hit, becoming a number 1 hit, and staying at the top of the charts in America and the UK. Favourite songs to choose from the musical include “Rewrite the Stars”, “The Greatest Show” and “This Is Me” which was nominated for a Best Original Song Oscar.
